I’m a photographer and filmmaker based in London.

Contrary of popular belief outside of Turkey, my first name, Can is pronounced as [d͡ʒáŋ] and not as can as in a can of coke. It actually sounds pretty similar to John. As for my last name, it has two letters that often confuses non-Turkish speakers: ö, and ğ. Ö is read as /œː/, as “ur” in nurse, with lips rounded, while Ğ is a silent letter which we call soft G. It generally has no sound of its own, with its effect varying depending on its location in a word and the surrounding vowels. In my case, it prolongs the “o” that comes before, making it sound like Köroolu.
